A Voice for Life in Education

Miss Connie Bancroft, National Executive Director

Teachers Saving Children® is an organization of pro-life teachers and other concerned citizens committed to establishing a respect for all human life from conception to natural death, especially among professional educators' organizations.

In the late 1980s, a New Jersey teacher had the vision of starting a pro-life organization of educators dedicated to the purpose of changing the National Education Association's (NEA) position on abortion. Out of the growing concern of several Ohio pro-life educators the Teachers Saving Children® Ohio Chapter was officially organized in February 1991. Miss Connie Bancroft serves as the Executive Director for the Ohio Teachers Saving Children® State Chapter.

On September 17, 1994, the Ohio Chapter Teachers Saving Children® Board of Trustees passed a resolution to form a Teachers Saving Children® - National Corporation. In the summer of 1995, the process of incorporating the new Teachers Saving Children® National organization was completed making it possible for other states to form affiliate state chapters under the national umbrella. After working with individuals in Pennsylvania for about a year and a half, the National Teachers Saving Children® Board of Trustees on March 1, 1997, approved the Pennsylvania State Chapter affiliation. Robin Ross is serving as the Executive Director for the Pennsylvania Teachers Saving Children® State Chapter Affiliate. Then on October 31, 1998, the National Teachers Saving Children® Board of Trustees approved the Michigan State Chapter affiliation. Ron Cain is currently serving as the Statuatory Agent for the Michigan Teachers Saving Children® State Chapter Affiliate.

The need for an organization such as Teachers Saving Children® is vital in today's society. Even if one does not belong to the NEA or the AFT, these national unions represent the educators of America. The NEA is the largest teacher's union in the nation as well as the world's largest democratic deliberative body--larger than the Democratic and Republican national conventions combined. It is also one of the most influential lobbying organizations in the nation's capital on issues that affect the teaching professional and the children in their care. The NEA is also involved in the social agenda, including the abortion issue, and is one of the primary advocates of Planned Parenthood. They co-sponsored the pro-abortion rally in Washington DC in November 1989, April 1992, and again in April 2004.

Resolutions represent the philosophy of the organization and thus become policy. Each year the NEA reaffirms its pro-abortion position by approving Resolution I-12 that was adopted in 1985, amended in 1986, and replaced a similar 1978 resolution. Resolution I-12 (formerly I-13) reads as follows:

"The National Education Association supports family planning, including the right to reproductive freedom.

The Association urges the government to give high priority to making available all methods of family planning to women and men unable to take advantage of private facilities.

The Association further urges the implementation of community-operated school-based family planning clinics that will provide intensive counseling by trained personnel." (emphasis mine)

There are two goals of the Teachers Saving Children® organization. One of the goals of Teachers Saving Children® is to work within the union framework to request that the NEA take no position on the issue of abortion. To achieve this goal, Teachers Saving Children® educates delegates to the state and/or national representative assemblies and cooperates with other pro-life organizations.

Another goal is to educate professional educators about their options regarding union membership. Teachers Saving Children® has printed a brochure entitled "Participation in Teacher Unions: Your Rights, Responsibilities, and Options". This brochure outlines the three basic options of union participation: "Fair Share/Agency Fee"; Religious Accommodation; and Full Union Membership.

The governing body of Teachers Saving Children®-National consists of a Board of Trustees with voting members that include five at-large members and one representative from each state affiliate plus the Executive Director who is a non-voting member. Teachers Saving Children®-National is recognized under Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. Therefore any memberships and/or contributions received are NOT tax deductible. Membership is open to all pro-life/pro-family educators as well as concerned citizens. Membership in a professional educators' organization is not a requirement to join Teachers Saving Children®.

In addition, Teachers Saving Children® also publishes an informative bimonthly newsletter. Members are encouraged to write articles, editorials, and letters to elected officials. The Teachers Saving Children® Board members are available for speaking engagements and workshops.

Please keep the entire organization in prayer as they undertake the above responsibilities. The success of the Teachers Saving Children® national organization and its state affiliates depend largely on educators who are willing to take a stand for life. Your support at this time is appreciated. Come and be a voice with us in letting America know that the grassroots educator loves children - even the preborn.
