"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
"A major cultural shift is threatening the moral foundation of our country," stated Josh McDowell during a recent Parent/Adult Seminar held in the Cleveland-Akron area.
A well-known speaker and author who travels the nation with the "Right from Wrong" campaign, Josh McDowell annually speaks to thousands of parents, leaders of the Christian community, and teens. Recently, I had the opportunity to once again hear Josh McDowell speak. He shared many important principles that all of us needed to hear; many of which can be related specifically to the sanctity of life issue. The following information includes some of the important principles that were shared during the seminar along with the incorporation of my own personal insights.
Today America is experiencing a major cultural shift, and not only is the church missing what is happening, but so is the pro-life community. Our teens are facing the greatest threat to their lives, not knowing what makes some things right and other things wrong. There are no absolutes being taught.
As found in Micah 6:8, the Lord has required of us justice, mercy, and humility. Yet, the Number 1 virtue in America today is tolerance. Today's definition of tolerance has changed drastically from the traditional definition. Traditionally, whenever we tolerated an opinion or practice, we still loved and accepted the individual, but didn't accept the lifestyle or the "sin". Today, that definition would be considered "negative tolerance". The definition of tolerance used today is referred to as "positive tolerance" and states that "every individual's beliefs, values, lifestyles, and truth claims are equal." In other words, every belief, value, and lifestyle is to be accepted and respected; there is no value better or greater than another.(footnote 1)
The Josh McDowell Ministry and the Barna Research Group joined together to conduct a survey of 3,795 churched youth. They had the cooperation of thirteen church denominations throughout the United States and Canada. The profile of the students surveyed is as follows:
* 86% indicated that they had made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that still affects their lives today
* 82% attend church services every week
* 73% attend a youth group each week
* 72% came from two-parent homes(footnote 1)
The survey itself contained 193 questions that were divided into four categories: Love and Sex; Marriage and Family; Faith and Religion; and Attitudes and Lifestyles. [The complete questionnaire and the statistical analysis can be found in the book Right From Wrong, by Josh McDowell.] The results are astounding as can be seen by the following:
* 71% of the students believed that when it comes to matters of morals and ethics, truth means different things to different people and no one can be absolutely positive that they have the truth.
* 38% said that lying is sometimes necessary, and 66% had lied to a parent, teacher, or older person in the last three months.
* 70% of the students surveyed believed that what is right for one person in a given situation might not be right for another person who encounters the same situation.
* By the age of 16, 18% had engaged in sexual intercourse and by age 18, 27% had admitted to "going all the way".(footnote 1)
No wonder our students are confused and can't discern right from wrong! No wonder our students, when backed into a corner during a discussion or debate, can't explain the reasons why something is right or wrong. It doesn't matter the religious background; many students and adults who have strong beliefs and convictions do not translate those beliefs and convictions into their daily behavior and lifestyle. As stated during the recent Parent/Adult Seminar, there is often a 0% continuity between beliefs and behavior.
What are we to do and how should we respond? Josh McDowell shares four things that he believes we are called to do.
* Pursue truth.
* Affirm beliefs and develop deep convictions.
* Identify with justice.
* Love others.(footnote 1)
The opposite of tolerance is love. We, as Christians, are called to love all men while speaking the truth about sin - and about the sanctity of life. Jesus Christ is the greatest example of how we are to love others. As we exemplify Christ in and through our lives, and as we educate and share our love and concern for those who need to understand the value of life, let us act justly and exercise love and mercy towards those who need to experience the love of Christ.
Editor's Note: Information included in this article was taken from the author's Parent/Adult Seminar personal notes and from the provided Parent/Adult Seminar booklet (noted as footnote 1 throughout the article).
1. Election of Officers for the 2000-2001 fiscal year was held. Connie Bancroft will serve as the Executive Director; Gary Winney will serve as the Assistant Executive Director; Lisa Rudloff will serve as Secretary; David Kaiser will serve as Treasurer.
2. The Board of Trustees discussed at great length the TSC purposes statement. The Board has made a proposed change to the purpose statement placing the primary focus of TSC on a respect for all human life with the secondary focus on influencing the professional educators' organizations.
3. By faith, the Board of Trustees made a decision to apply for an exhibit booth at the NEA RA in Chicago. Since this item has not been budgeted, the trustees made a decision to request funds specifically for this endeavor. (See related article.)
4. The Board of Trustees discussed several different public relation strategies to increase and involve the membership.
Membership: As of April 1, 2000, there are 336 paid TSC members. TSC membership is open to all pro-life/pro-family educators and concerned citizens. Contributions and memberships are NOT tax deductible. Please note that according to the TSC Constitution & Bylaws, the membership year is from September 1 - August 31. Our membership drive for the 2000-2001 membership year will begin June 1st. Renewal membership information will be sent to all current members in early July.
The teacher, Gerard O'Brien, filed a religious discrimination complaint in 1995 after being suspended for five days for refusing to pay fees that helped fund the union's pro-abortion political activity. O'Brien argues that paying fees to the Springfield Education Association would violate his personal convictions and his Catholic faith because of the union's support of abortion. O'Brien has placed the money for the fees, about $400 per year, in an escrow account. The case is expected to be reviewed by the full commission at a date to be determined.
While the Springfield Education Association claims it takes no stand on abortion, it acknowledges that it gives money, received from union dues, to the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association which support pro-abortion political activity."
'Disassociation from the NEA' provides detailed explanations of the steps necessary to decertify, disaffiliate, resign, or deauthorize. The booklet also describes results of these actions and gives contact information for legal guidance and/or representation.
ACTION: To order a free copy of 'Disassociation from the NEA,' contact the Education Policy Institute at 202-244-7535 or access the booklet through their website at www.educationalpolicy.org."
Coming up soon is the opportunity to reach not only hundreds, but thousands of educators with the pro-life message. The NEA Representative Assembly (RA) is set for July 1-6 in Chicago. The NEA RA includes 2 1/2 days of exhibits along with other pre-RA activities, and 3 1/2 days of business.
By faith, the TSC Inc. - National Board of Trustees made a decision to apply for exhibit space in the huge display area during the pre-RA activities. TSC members, who are also representing their Local Association or the NEA State Affiliate Association as NEA delegates, are doing what we have heard YOU, our members, say you want us to do. We are putting the facts and the wonder of human development before the largest assembly of decision-makers in the teachers' union. TSC will be investing $1,100 for the exhibit space rental alone, without counting the additional $300-400 cost for miscellaneous fees and materials.
The purpose of our exhibit area will be to promote and provide educational classroom materials especially for science and health teachers. All materials will be age-appropriate, positive, colorful, and scientifically accurate regarding the wonder of life in utero. For example, we have scientifically accurate videos and CDs that show the baby moving inside the mom even in the 1st trimester. We have posters, brochures, and order forms that will "knock the socks" off health and science teachers because the items are so awesome and usable in the classroom. The book Before You Were Born will be a hit with primary teachers and parents of young children. This children's book, with fold-out pictures done in cartoon style, is being used in doctor's offices and is acclaimed as tasteful, fascinating, and fun to read to kids. One of the brochures, "All About You" is published by Nurses for Community Education. The brochure is about the early development of a baby and is set up in a question-answer format. Junior high and high school teachers will love this brochure as well as many other brochures that will be provided, at no cost, to individuals who visit the exhibit booth. Much time and research have been put into picking out materials of high quality and appeal. We feel that YOU, our members, would be proud of our selections.
Now - here comes the big question - Can you spare $5 or $10 to help us fund this booth? Where can we better try to reach educators with our views on the sanctity of human life than at the NEA RA? The people who serve you on the Teachers Saving Children® Board of Trustees are reaching deep into their own pockets to make this "The Wonder of Life" exhibit at the NEA RA a reality. Can you help with this grand effort to educate our educators (and their classes) on the wonder of human development? The more people are exposed to the "awesomeness" of a little child growing in his/her mother, the more they will realize the value of a living, growing, human child, a singular creation in God's purposeful plan.
Again, can you spare $5? $10? Or more? Being pro-life and pro-family at the NEA RA is not easy, but we are determined, with God's help, to open the eyes of people to the wonder of human life and God's creation. Each child born into this world will thank you for your contribution towards educating teachers about "The Wonder of Life".
Note: Please make checks payable to "TSC Inc. - National" and designate the amount towards this endeavor as "Display".
Freedom To Learn was born out of two Supreme Court cases, Roe verses Wade and the Planned Parenthood versus Casey decisions. Roe proclaimed abortion to be a constitutional right. Schools must support and uphold such rights. As a result, the abortion debate was skewed in one direction...toward choice. Roe not only took the lives of the unborn, it prohibited one generation of school kids from learning the truth in their public schools.
Then everything changed: Roe was dramatically altered by the Planned Parenthood versus Casey decision. The Court ruled that schools and other state agencies could take an independent position on abortion. Here is the challenge. James Bopp, General Counsel for National Right To Life has said this about the current situation: "As a result of the Casey decision, schools can now offer an aggressive pro-life curriculum at all grade levels, K-12...but teachers, parents, and pro-lifers do not know it." Our challenge, then, is to see that communities are informed.
The Day of Remembrance: In April of this year, Freedom To Learn will sponsor an event called The Day of Remembrance. This is a special day to recognize the loss of 40 million unborn children, as well as the hurt suffered by countless women. Our two co-sponsors from last year, Whylife and Rockforlife, American Life League's teen groups, as well as Johnny Hunter, nationally known leader of L.E.A.R.N., will serve as vital co-sponsors. Our goal this year is 200 schools.
On the Day of Remembrance, students will distribute literature during the school day that explains the pro-life message. In short, it is a lit drop. All perfectly legal and backed by the Liberty Counsel of Orlando.
Students Will Also Address School Boards: In addition to students going to public school campuses, we encourage adults (and students) to go to their school boards. Finally, one generation of censorship can end...and communities must understand their rights to expose students to a positive life ethic.
Join the Effort: Please for the sake of dear life get involved. Contact Freedom To Learn at 941-627-6757, or by e-mail at beas22@nut-n-but.net. This April...take a stand.
