FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

"When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy."

Two thousand years ago on a quiet starry night in the city of Bethlehem, Christ our Savior was born. Reflecting on the stars in the sky, we are reminded of the Christmas carol "Away in a Manger," which states that "the stars in the sky looked down where He lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay." What tranquility!

Now let's contrast this quiet scene of His birth with the awesome majesty of His triumphant return to earth a second time. In the song, "We Shall Behold Him," Dottie Rambo writes, "The stars shall applaud Him with thunders of praise...and we shall behold Him then face to face." What glory!

This Christmas season Christ is challenging each one of us to remain faithful to His calling and ministry as we persevere and stand together for the Sanctity of Life. As we gaze upward at the stars with the expectation of His return, "let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25b NIV)

NEW INSIGHTFUL PUBLICATIONS

Teachers Held Hostage: The Disturbing Agenda of the National Education Association by Perry L. Glanzer and Travis Pardo. This public policy paper provides information about what the NEA believes and how it uses its political and monetary clout to promote a highly controversial agenda. The document also suggests practical ways that both educators and concerned citizens can respond to the NEA's agenda.

Perry Glanzer is an education policy analyst in the public policy division of Focus on the family. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in social ethics specializing in educational policy and ethics, character education, and moral development. Travis Pardo has a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Religion specializing in the study of the relationship between religion, morality, and public policy. This document is available for a suggested donation of $8 by contacting Focus on the Family at 1-800-232-6459.

The Teacher Unions: How the NEA and AFT Sabotage Reform and Hold Students, Parents, Teachers, and Taxpayers Hostage to Bureaucracy by Myron Lieberman. Renowned education expert, Myron Lieberman reveals how the national political activities of the NEA and the AFT are far removed from the grassroots teachers' political interests or preferences, and how these unions stifle the views and dissent of its own members. He shows how these unions raise and spend vast amounts of money; how they protect the power and earnings of more than 6000 officers and staff; and how they employ a large number of political employees, more than the Republican and Democratic parties combined. His conclusion is simple: We need teacher organizations that cost far less and that focus on educational improvement and teacher welfare rather than unions that maintain an affluent bureaucracy and a political agenda opposed by numerous educators.

The NEA and the AFT combined enroll over three million members and their local, state, and national revenues exceed $1 billion annually, not counting their foundations, subsidiaries, and PACs. With the NEA and AFT preparing to merge possibly as early as 1998, no one concerned about the future of education in America can afford to ignore Dr. Lieberman's message.

Myron Lieberman is Senior Research Scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. He has taught both at the high school and university levels and is the author of numerous books on education. His experiences as a consultant for both the NEA and the AFT and as the chief negotiator of over 200 union contracts between teacher unions and school districts in six states has allowed him to observe the emergence, operations, and consequences of teacher unions. He currently lives in Washington DC.

This book is available for $25.00 (plus $3 for shipping and handling charges unless paying by check) by contacting the Education Policy Institute, 4401-A Connecticut Ave, NW, Box 294, Washington DC 20008 * 202-244-7535.

1998 NEA REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY

New Orleans LA, July 1-6, 1998: All policies of the NEA are adopted by the delegates to the annual Representative Assembly. These delegates are selected by their colleagues in the local and state affiliates to represent their views in the deliberation of the assembly.

We need to encourage NEA members who represent our philosophy to run for delegate; it is an unforgettable experience that every educator should have at least once in his or her career. We need delegates who believe that our dues money should not be spent to support abortion and should not be spent to support any issue that is not directly related to education.

If you have made the choice of maintaining union membership, please help us fight this battle. Now is the time to run for NEA delegate. It's so simple. Just contact your NEA State affiliate office and/or your local association president for complete information. Don't make it complicated by campaigning, because if the Lord wants you to win, you'll win!

If you cannot attend the NEA convention, please encourage other educators who share our views to consider becoming a delegate. Get involved either as a candidate and/or educate yourself about the candidates. Then PRAY and VOTE!

The success of this chapter will depend largely on pro-life educators from Michigan who are willing to take a stand for life. Please keep the entire committee in prayer as they undertake these added responsibilities.

TEENS FOR LIFE...A CALLING

Lisa Huelskamp, OTFL State Co-coordinator
Anna and Botkins Local Schools

Our students warm our hearts, open our eyes, and enrich our lives in our classrooms. But outside those walls, nothing is more rewarding than to see tomorrow's future adults formulate, solidify, and refine his or her pro-life platform. YOU can be a part of this process by spreading the word about Teens for Life and/or becoming active in the organization in a variety of capacities.

Why Teens for Life? Our pro-life students need to be with other teens so they can discuss the issues freely. It is often difficult for them to do so in many of our schools today. And, from these chapters, the energized students can move on to college and county chapters.

What can a Teens for Life Chapter do? Oratory contests, bake sales for pregnancy distress centers, volunteering at local nursing homes, working to put pro-life literature on their library's shelves, school awareness posters, essay contests, January marches, parade floats,...Once these kids get together, with a little guidance, the options are limitless.

What help is needed? Currently, I (Lisa) have lists of students from Ohio who have either called me, signed up at a fair booth, or contacted Ohio Right to Life. These kids are on fire. Now, OTFL is seeking adult chapter advisors, county coordinators, and regional coordinators. It's all coming together, we just need more adults!

If you or someone you know...a colleague, a spouse, a neighbor, a student's parent,...has a passion for pro-life issues and a deep concern and love for today's teens, please join us in creating, nurturing, and networking our Teens for Life Chapters. Spread the news to young people. The time is now.

In Ohio, call Ohio Right to Life or E-mail Lisa at al_huelskamp@woco.ohio.gov today. Outside Ohio, contact Heather Clapsaddle or Derrick Jones, National Teens for Life Coordinators, at 202-626-8800 ext 153.

"HIS TRUTH KEEPS MARCHING ON"

25th ANNUAL MARCH FOR LIFE

JANUARY 22, 1998

WASHINGTON DC

Twenty-five years ago on January 22, 1973, the US Supreme Court handed down the Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton
decisions that brought about abortion on demand in America through all nine months of pregnancy. Awareness of this
tragic decision should spur us on to make this coming March for Life the largest one ever!

The March for Life Benefits All
* It gives voice to the children.
* It gives encouragement to our friends in government.
* It encourages us.
* It trains young leaders.

For complete details concerning the events of January 22nd,
please contact your local Right to Life Chapter or State Right to Life office.

For those pro-life teachers and school employees who can't go to Washington DC,
it is suggested that you attend the pro-life marches or rallies being held in your own local areas.

Let's stand together for the Sanctity of Life.
