FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

"...but the greatest of these is love."
                              -I Corinthians 13:13

As I have prayed, meditated, and pondered over the theme for this article, I keep coming back to the theme of love. As one does an in-depth study of the word "love", we find in the Greek three types of love.

The first type of love is "eros". Love of this type is the sovereign preference of one person for another and typically involves strong feelings that the person has for the other. It generally refers to a sexual passion or love.

The second type of love is "philia", which means brotherly love. Individuals express brotherly love towards family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. For example, after the 9/11 terrorists attacks, our nation came together as individuals expressed a brotherly type love through time, aid, and monetary donations.

The third type of love is "agape" love, the love of God. Love of this depth within our lives is the outward evidence of God's grace working within us for it is only God Who can produce agape love within our hearts. Agape love is a way of life made possible only by the power of God. It is a deep love that is not premeditated, but is by its very nature characterized by spontaneity.

In John 13:35 Jesus said that "all men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another." To Christ, the distinguishing mark of His disciples is not merely what the Church teaches, but how we live our lives showing His love to one another. And if we genuinely exhibit this agape love, the world will be obliged to confess that our Christianity - our deeds are sincere.

There are many women and men who are hurting from crisis pregnancies... from broken relationships... from abortions... from wrong choices/decisions...all who need the healing power of God's agape love in their lives. And the only way that the hearts of men and women will change regarding the issue and hurts of abortion will be through the agape love of God causing that change to occur. God can use each one of us when we are willing to be open vessels to express and show that agape love to those who need this healing touch.

But are we willing to reach out and touch a life knowing that we may not receive anything in return, except the blessing of helping someone in need? Are we willing to put aside the busyness of our lives and allow the Lord to use each of us to touch a life today?

Not one of the three types of love will remain unless they are cultivated. Although love is spontaneous, it has to be maintained by discipline. The real test of our love is doing the things that do not count in the eyes of man, but count in the eyes of God.

Let's pray and seek the Lord during this month of February - the month during which the world celebrates love - and allow the deep agape love of God to be expressed spontaneously through our lives to those women and men who are hurting. Only when we are willing to sacrifice our own desires and agendas and pay the price for the cause of the sanctity of life and for the hurting women and men of this nation will the Lord be able to use us to help change the hearts and lives regarding the issue of the sanctity of human life.

A MIRACULOUS STORY

From Life Issues Today by Dr. J. C. Willke

"Here is a true story that recently took place in northern Kentucky. Mrs. Chastity Cooper is a young woman in her early 20's. She and her husband, Steve, were the parents of two boys, ages 3 and 4.

It was a rainy night when she dropped the two boys off at her sister's to baby-sit. She was on her way to meet Steve at a family get-together. She skidded on the wet pavement, her car slid into the path of another car and their lives were changed forever. Chastity suffered severe head injuries and sank into coma.

Nobody, not even her husband, knew at that time that she was pregnant. Routine tests performed at the hospital revealed that she was two weeks into her pregnancy when the accident occurred.

She had good care after that time but remained in coma and continued to carry the baby until one week shy of full term. During the pregnancy, she had been slowly improving. Later she was able to open her eyes and follow people around the room but could not move or talk.

Abortion? Steve firmly shook his head and said no, that was never an option. And so what happened? Chastity went into labor and gave birth in a normal fashion, remaining in coma the whole time. She gave birth to a healthy little girl, seven pounds, seven ounces. Little Alexis's mother smiled after the delivery and seemed to respond when the little infant was placed in her lap.

The doctors have been dumbfounded. Dr. Michael Hant, a neonatologist at the University Hospital in Cincinnati, said, 'This is one of the only cases ever in the United States where a woman was in coma throughout the entire pregnancy.'

And how about little Alexis? Well, she slept through the news conference at the hospital, blissfully unaware of the amazing conditions of her birth. Her daddy said, 'She's precious. We waited for this baby a long time; she's absolutely adorable.'

But now comes the hard part. Steve lost his job because he took too much time off and had to find another one. Without that income, they couldn't keep up the payments on their mobile home, lost it and were living with relatives.

Steve says, 'I try not to think ahead. I'm a firm believer in playing the cards you're dealt, but I have three precious children and I want to keep them.'

There has been considerable publicity about this situation; in fact, it received national coverage. Steve was on the Paul Harvey Show, the British Broadcasting Corporation, a German TV station, and written up in a British tabloid. The story was told coast to coast -- and what happened? Well, let him tell you.

He said, 'Words can't truly convey how much all of your support has meant to me and my family. At such a challenging time, your cards and letters really lifted our spirits. I never knew just how many caring and giving people there are in this world. I don't know what to think about all the attention, but if it wasn't for all the attention, we wouldn't have received so much support. It's extremely gratifying; it's also mind boggling.'

Steve received several hundred cards and letters from as far away as Europe and over $25,000 in donations. He has used part of this to make a down payment on a home. In the meantime, his wife Chastity has been transferred to a top-notch rehabilitation facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since she has been there, she has made continuous progress. She now opens her eyes more and can use her fingers to respond to questions.

Her doctors still say that the odds are against a full recovery, but I'm a physician; I've been around a long time now, and I'll tell you, in situations like this, as long as recovery continues, more recovery is yet to come.

Steve sends his thanks to the many people who have sent money, offered prayers and support, gave him an automobile, and -- more good news -- he's had several good job offers."

PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH
MAKES REMARKS BY PHONE TO THE MARCH FOR LIFE RALLY

On Tuesday, January 22, 2002, thousands of Americans gathered in Washington DC to mark the 29th anniversary of Roe v Wade. During the Rally at the Washington Monument, President George W. Bush made the following remarks by phone.

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary (Charleston, WV)

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT IN PHONE CALL TO MARCH FOR LIFE PARTICIPANTS at 12:08 PM EST:
THE PRESIDENT: "Nellie, thank you very much. I want to thank you very much, and I want to wish everybody a good afternoon. I'm calling from the state of West Virginia.

I want to begin, Nellie, by praising you and your dedication to the cause of human life. For almost 30 years, Americans from every state in the Union have gathered in the Washington Mall in order to march for life. This march is an example of an inspiring commitment and of deep human compassion.

Everyone there believes, as I do, that every life is valuable; that our society has a responsibility to defend the vulnerable and weak, the imperfect and even the unwanted; and that our nation should set a great goal that unborn children should be welcomed in life and protected in law.

Abortion is an issue that deeply divides our country. And we need to treat those with whom we disagree with respect and civility. We must overcome bitterness and rancor where we find it and seek common ground where we can. But we will continue to speak out on behalf of the most vulnerable members of our society.

We do so because we believe the promises of the Declaration of Independence are the common code of American life. They should apply to everyone, not just the healthy or the strong or the powerful. A generous society values all human life. A merciful society seeks to expand legal protection to every life, including early life. And a compassionate society will defend a simple, moral proposition, life should never be used as a tool, or a means to an end.

These are bedrock principles and that is why my administration opposes partial-birth abortion and public funding for abortion; -- why we support teen abstinence and crisis pregnancy programs; adoption and parental notification laws; and why we are against all forms of human cloning.

And that is why I urge the United States Senate to support a comprehensive and effective ban on human cloning, a ban that was passed by an overwhelming and bipartisan vote of the House of Representatives last July.

We are a society with enough compassion and wealth and love to care for both mothers and their children, and to seek the promise and potential of every single life. You're working and marching on behalf of a noble cause, and affirming a culture of life. Thank you for your persistence, for defending human dignity, and for caring for every member of the human family.

May God continue to bless America. Thank you very much."

"THE WONDER OF LIFE" EXHIBIT

Coming up soon is the opportunity to reach thousands of educators with the pro-life message. The NEA Expo 2002, 21/2 days of exhibits, will take place June 30 - July 2, 2002 in Dallas TX prior to the NEA RA.

By faith, TSC is once again making application for exhibit space during NEA Expo 2002. The purpose of the exhibit will be to promote and provide educational classroom materials especially for science and health teachers. Again this year TSC will be investing $1,100 for the exhibit space rental alone, without counting the additional $300-400 cost for miscellaneous fees, materials, and the transporting of our materials from Ohio to Texas.

Already many individuals have begun to spare $5, $10, $20, and more to help us fund this exhibit. However, additional contributions are needed as we continue to prepare for this special exhibit. Each child born into this world will thank you for your contribution towards educating teachers about "The Wonder of Life".

Note: Please make checks payable to "TSC Inc. - National". Please carefully note how the amount given is to be designated (NEA Exhibit) so that the contribution will be appropriately allocated.

WHO WILL REPRESENT YOU AT NEA

Quick - who casts your vote at the NEA Representative Assembly? If you don't know, you should know.

Often we know who our local officers and building representatives are. However, most of our dues money, in fact hundreds of dollars, goes beyond the local level to other levels of the Association. Knowing who represents us and how they vote isn't just a matter of principle; it's a matter of how our dues money is being spent.

Comments are often heard that the NEA and its state affiliates have a strong tradition of democratic governance. The NEA Representative Assembly, the annual meeting of the Association, is the largest deliberative body in the world. During the Representative Assembly, delegates vote on issues that affect us in many ways: they adopt all the NEA policies, the budget, and the resolutions; enact legislative agendas; consider many new business items; elect Association officers; and vote on amendments to the NEA governing documents.

All delegates are selected in the local and state affiliates by their colleagues to represent their views in the deliberation of the assembly. It is not too late to get involved. Details for running as a state delegate can be received from your state affiliate office. The state delegate elections will take place between now and mid-March.

For local delegate representation to the NEA RA, check with your local president. Election results from local affiliates are not due to their state affiliates until April 15. Unless your local Constitution & Bylaws allows for officers to serve as your delegates and/or allows for multi-year terms for delegates, most voting should take place between now and the first part of April.

So watch those local memos and newsletters carefully for NEA delegate election information. There are deadlines! We will only get good representation when members take the time to get involved by educating ourselves about the candidates, and VOTING!
