FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

It is hard to believe that it is mid-October already. For most of us that means we are now busy with our students as well as involved with our families and other personal interests. Time is precious to all of us. Yet, every day the lives of unborn children continue to be taken from us.

Beliefs are not worth much if we are not willing to live (or die) by them. Many times we grow weary in our labors that often go unnoticed. Recently God has been teaching me much about perseverance. Often results are not immediately seen as change takes time and may come in small steps. No one person can do it all, but as each one of us perseveres by doing our part - no matter how small - we will see great progress in the effort to move the NEA into an abortion free position.

What we are requesting is more than reasonable and is achievable. So let us persevere to the end of the battle for the life of each unborn child. The ultimate victory will be worth it all.

Note: Both the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director feel that it is very important to stay "above aboard" in everything we do. In addition, we feel that it is important to keep the membership well informed. Included in this newsletter are highlights of our recent Board of Trustee meetings as well as our annual fiscal reports.

TSC INC. - NATIONAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING
HIGHLIGHTS

The TSC National Board of Trustees met in Wooster, Ohio on September 23, 1995. The following are highlights of some of the items which were discussed.

1. The main discussion of this meeting was the finances. A review will be done by a CPA of the 1994-95 books. The financial records will now be kept on computer and TSC will write its own checks by computer instead of using Cashier Checks from the bank. All transactions will be done by check only.

2. The Board approved the use of an expense voucher for all expenses that need to be reimbursed to an individual Board member or the Executive Director.

3. The Board approved an Affiliate State Chapter Application and process.

4. The Board decided that the same workshop proposal as last year will be submitted to National Right to Life for their 1996 Convention.

5. The Board approved the 1995-96 National TSC budget:

Phone $ 300.00
Postage 1100.00
Administrative Supplies 300.00
Public Relations 500.00

AFFILIATE STATE CHAPTERS TO BEGIN

One of the goals of TSC-National is to work with leadership across the nation to begin TSC State Chapters. At its recent Board of Trustees meeting, the application process was approved. As we begin the process of starting state chapters across the nation, we ask for your prayers and your patience. The first affiliate to be processed will be the most difficult as we are all working and learning through the procedure. However, we know that as our membership grows and as affiliate state chapters are added, the process will become easier.

An individual from Pennsylvania has been in contact with TSC-National about starting an Affiliate State Chapter. The formal application process has begun and the TSC Executive Director will be meeting with individuals from Pennsylvania in late October. There are individuals from several other states who have indicated an interest in starting an Affiliate State Chapter within their state. In the next several months these individuals will be contacted so that those states can also begin the process. If you are interested in getting a TSC Affiliate State Chapter started in your state, please contact TSC for further information.

Money for T-shirts was deposited in the National account and then transferred to the Ohio account. T-shirts and sweatshirts are a public relations project of the Ohio Chapter corporation.

#Note: When comparing fiscal reports one will notice that the phone amounts for national and the phone reimbursement to Ohio from national don't match. The phone line as of March 1995 is in the name of TSC Inc. of Ohio. Prior to March 1995, National reimbursed directly to the Executive Director for phone expenses. After March 1995, National reimbursed directly to the Ohio Chapter corporation for phone expenses.

Just an additional comment about the Fiscal Report. There was a large number of membership renewals paid prior to September 1, 1995. Thank you for helping the Board to have a better picture of what our finances would be like for the 1995-96 fiscal year. TSC does not solicit additional contributions beyond memberships, but does appreciate any additional contributions received throughout the year.

JUST A REMINDER: 1995-96 MEMBERSHIPS

We are still accepting both renewal and new memberships for the 1995-96 membership year. Since its incorporation, information about TSC has been spread throughout the nation by word of mouth. It is not too late to share information about TSC with your colleagues and encourage them to join with us.

This fall one very innovative and creative TSC member shared a TSC brochure with her colleagues. Inside the brochure she included a small pamphlet on life beginning at conception and a note which read:

"The NEA and [name of state affiliate] support 'reproductive freedom' (interpreted during assemblies as including the right to abortion). Many of us, NEA members, do not. For this reason, a number of teachers from [our] county are members of TSC (Teachers Saving Children). We want the NEA to take NO STAND on the issue of abortion, rather than espouse the right to abort a baby. For further information contact [gave names to contact]. Please care. We can make a difference. Many of us are working with our NEA organization to try to change this policy."

Reminder: TSC membership is open to all pro-life/pro-family educators and concerned citizens who agree with our purpose to establish among professional educators' organizations a respect for all human life from conception to natural death. Membership in a professional educators' organization is not a requirement to join TSC.

A revised TSC Ohio brochure is now available. There are also TSC National brochures available. Contact TSC to receive multiple copies of the brochure to share with your colleagues. Let's continue to recruit the troops as we work together in this battle for life.

1995 NEA CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS CORRECTIONS

In the August 1995 TSC newsletter we reported on the recent NEA convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After running that article, we received additional information and need to share two corrections.

The first correction involves the results of the Amendment 9 voting which occurred on Thursday, July 6. The official results as reported by Educators for Life Caucus should have read:

      For: 2162; Against: 4553

The second correction involves the second motion to change Resolution I-13. TSC reported that the second motion was to delete Resolution I-13. The delegate who made the motion has reported to us that the second motion was to only delete the words "...including the right to reproductive freedom". This motion did fail as reported by TSC.

TSC wants to thank Ed Weber of Educators for Life and Denney Smith, a pro-life delegate for helping TSC correct this report.

OHIO LIFE ISSUES CAUCUS REPORT

When the Ohio Education Association (OEA) convenes for its fall meeting on December 2, 1995, the Ohio Life Issues Caucus will once again be there to do its bidding on behalf of life. Pro-life delegates have been working throughout the summer and early on in the school year to prepare for this Representative Assembly. OEA members have filed a petition (227 signatures received; only 100 signatures needed) with the OEA Constitution & Bylaws Committee to place the following amendment before the delegate body:

TITLE:        FINANCIAL RESTRICTIONS AMENDMENT

PURPOSE:  To limit expenditures on non-educational issues.

PROPOSED CHANGES IN LANGUAGE:
Bylaw addition to 11-1 - add e:

"The OEA Secretary-Treasurer will be responsible to ensure that no OEA general fund and/or dues moneys will be used to support or lobby on behalf of any position regarding the abortion issue."

Once signatures on the petition are verified by OEA, then the amendment will be placed before the delegates. It is our hope that the process will be completed in time for the Fall RA. If you are a member of the OEA (Ohio Education Association), your help is needed immediately. Please talk with your local OEA delegate(s) and request that, if presented for a vote in December, they vote in favor of the amendment. Thank you for your help on this important matter.

For more information on participating with Ohio Life Issues Caucus, please contact Gary Winney at 216-944-4409.

TSC BOARD OF TRUSTEES

In the August 1995 issue of the TSC newsletter, information about members of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director were shared. In this issue we will be sharing about another Board of Trustee member.

Carolyn Croll has been a member of the Ohio Chapter Board of Trustees for two years and the National Board of Trustees since its inception. She is currently an NEA member. She has been a teacher of hearing impaired students for 20 years. Having taught at all levels, she is currently teaching at the high school level in the Columbus (OH) city school system. Carolyn entered the field of teaching the hearing impaired because her mother has been hard of hearing all of her life. Her parents are retired and live in Massachusetts. She has a brother, living in Illinois, and a sister, living in Massachusetts, both of whom have 2 children. Carolyn is single, active in her church, and is interested in world missions.

Information about the remaining five Board of Trustees members will be shared in forthcoming newsletters. Hope this continues to help those individuals who are interested in TSC to know more about who we are - grassroots pro-life educators who are concerned about saving the lives of unborn children.
