FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

Recently I received a note from an individual expressing "thanks for the recent TSC newsletter and your valiant work. Here's a newsletter from our group's effort to fight the culture of death and to hold the union accountable to members...Continue in God's grace. He works from many angles!"

As I made preparations for Life Chain Sunday, I reflected on the many "angles" from which we can work in the battle for life - prayer, monetary, material gifts, volunteering at the local crisis pregnancy center, rallies, Life Chain, March for Life, or the support of pro-life organizations like Teens for Life or TSC. These "angles" are labors of love for the preborn and for the women facing a crisis pregnancy.

Yes, God does work through many angles. In I Corinthians 12 Paul writes to the Corinthian church about the gifts, ministries, and activities of the Spirit: "There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all." God works through individuals each blessed with different gifts, ministries, and activities, but together we are united in Christ and in purpose.

Let us be humble, yet bold in our obedience to God as we recognize that our stand and the "angle" through which we work or support is for the children, their mothers, and for the preservation of our nation. May the love of Christ flow through each one of you as He ministers through you for His glorification and the edification of the Church.

"God has a positive plan for each life, even those lives that are conceived as a result of bad choices."
-New Life News (June 1995)

TEENS FOR LIFE...

The Survivors of Our Generation

Raylene Hlavaty, OFTL State Co-coordinator

Who is Teens for Life? The abortion issue is of special importance to teens. We are the abortion generation. One third of our classmates were victims of abortion before they were born, and many more are victimized in their teens as another generation of babies is denied the right to life. Many of these teens experience the effects of post-abortion syndrome, guilt and despair common to abortion victims. Most teens get their information on abortion from peers, at school or through the media. These sources often reflect a bias in favor of unrestricted abortion.

The purpose of Teens for Life is to reach out to teens with the truth about abortion. Teens who are properly informed of the risks, dangers, and realities of abortion may choose not to take the life of their baby. We want to be a vehicle for communicating the truth.

National Teens for Life (NTL) is teenage America's answer to abortion on demand. NTL is founded on the principle that human life is precious from conception through natural death. Since its beginning in 1985, NTL has grown to include thousands of members in all fifty states. Ranging in age from junior high to college, these young people make up some of the most concerned and active forces for the pro-life cause. NTL is non-denominational and an outreach of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). We are non-violent and do not advocate illegal activities.

National Teens for Life hosts an annual Congressional Reception following the March for Life in Washington D.C. on January 22 and holds an NTL Convention in conjunction with the National Right to Life Committee convention every summer.

National Teens for Life feels that it is our responsibility and privilege to right this wrong and put an end to abortion on demand. We are the "abortion generation", but we are fighting back - fighting to ensure for our children and our children's children hope and a future.

AN NEA ARTICLE OF INTEREST?

NEA Today, May 1997, p. 7 - "Heroes & Zeroes"

Zero: "Help! Rescue the kids who face Operation Rescue's pestering picket lines. The anti-abortionists are assembling just outside 150 high schools around the country carrying huge, graphic photos of dismembered fetuses and calling it "an education campaign." Just 'cause they have the right doesn't make it right."

NEA Today, September 1997, p. 46 - Letters to the Editor

Two individuals wrote expressing their opinion regarding NEA's "Zeroes" opinion on Operation Rescue.

Greg Distel of Tiffin Ohio states: "Instead of giving Operation Rescue a zero for its education campaign in front of high schools (Heroes & Zeroes, May), you should applaud its efforts to save future students. The children killed every year by abortions will never grow up and be able to attend school. They will never be able to reach their potential."

Kathie Steele of Anchorage, Alaska states: "Your argument against Operation Rescue's campaign - 'Just cause they have the right doesn't make it right' - can work both ways. Just because women have the right to get an abortion doesn't make it right. Don't we call education a full spectrum of knowledge?"

Communication is vital, but to make change at the national and state levels one must first be informed. We need to read the association newsletters before we can respond effectively. Then our message, which is rational and sensible, will be heard.

Please take five minutes to write a letter to your state affiliate association president and to NEA President Bob Chase expressing your opposition to the NEA's pro-abortion position. In addition, please write a letter to the editor of NEA Today, just as Greg and Kathie did, expressing your opinion on various articles and issues.

NEA - TAX-EXEMPT!?

The September 26, 1997 edition of Ed Facts, a weekly publication of the Family Research Council, reported the following information about NEA's tax-exempt status.

"'You can't fire me - I quit!' With Congress set to sew up its property tax loophole, the National Education Association (NEA) announced this week that it will no longer oppose a repeal of its tax-exempt status. As a result of the loophole, the NEA was saving over $1 million a year. Now the union leadership is making much of what its million-dollar 'bequeathal' will do for D.C. schoolchildren. This announcement comes on the heels of advice from an outside public relations firm that the teachers union should remake its hard-edged image. But don't expect this new 'look' for the NEA to change its policies. . . ."

Congress has attempted on a number of previous occasions to revoke the NEA's tax-exempt charter, but the attempts have failed. The NEA charter, granted in 1907 when the NEA was a voluntary professional association rather than a union, gave the organization a tax-exempt status that to this day allows the union to avoid property taxes in the District of Columbia. This tax break of over $1 million annually on its Washington DC headquarters property is equivalent to the national annual dues of 14,000 members. Only time will tell if the NEA will follow through on this most recent announcement.
