"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
"Abortions less common in U.S." was the headline on page A3 in my local paper on Tuesday, October 8, 2002. This Association Press story shared information from the Alan Guttmacher Institute study about how abortions are becoming less common in the United States, particularly among teen-agers. However, the report of the Alan Guttmacher Institute also showed that the abortion rate climbed among low-income women. This recent study was based on questionnaires from more than 10,000 women who had abortions.
In general, the report showed that the overall United States abortion rate fell from 1994 to 2000 - from 24 abortions for every 1,000 women of childbearing age to just 21 abortions for every 1,000. In addition, the study showed a steep drop - nearly 40 percent - in the abortion rate for women 15 to 17 years old. In this age range the abortion rate fell from 24 per 1,000 young women in 1994 to just 15 per 1,000 in 2000.
Although the Alan Guttmacher Institute does receive some funding from Planned Parenthood, both sides of the abortion debate generally regard the Institute's abortion statistics as accurate and comprehensive. The Institute is planning additional research in the coming year to get a more concrete picture of the reasons behind the trends shown in this recent report. As I read this report I reflected upon another story that I had recently reread in the July 22, 2002 "Washington Update" published by Family Research Council. Its headlines read "Abstinence Education: Worth Its 'Wait' in Gold."
As I read both of these press stories, I was encouraged because the heart changing truth regarding the Sanctity of Life and the importance of Abstinence until marriage is prevailing. The persistence, faith, and prayers of so many individuals who continue to work hard for the cause of life is having a positive effect upon the hearts and lives of individuals.
Dr. Bernard Nathanson recently spoke at the Ohio Pro-Life Convention Luncheon. He said that the pro-life movement has one nuclear weapon in our arsenal, one thing that the pro-choice people will never have, and that is consistent, positive prayer. Yes, as we partner with God through prayer all things are possible. As we pray and persevere in doing our part with that which God has given us to do, we will continue to experience those seemingly impossible results, such as more abstinence among our teens and fewer abortions across our nation. Please join with us in continuing to be that VOICE FOR LIFE IN EDUCATION!

"And they call some of these people 'retarded'...
A few years ago, at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash.
At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry.
The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back.
Then they all turned around and went back...every one of them.
One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, 'This will make it better.' Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line.
Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story.
Why?
Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course."
Lord, we also hear these words, 'This is my body,' used by those who think they can take life, just because that life is growing within their bodies. We hear these words distorted by those who support abortion. Grant that all your people may learn that human fulfillment is never found by pushing someone else out of the way but only and always by yielding our private interest to a greater good. May all your people live their lives according to your most sacred words, 'This is my body, given up for you!'"
