NEA CONFIRMS PRO-ABORTION POSITION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 10, 1998, New Orleans, LA. Pro-life educators at the July 1-6 National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly in New Orleans, Louisiana, voiced objection to the NEA's liberal abortion position, not once, but five times. Teachers from Ohio, Illinois, New York, and Oklahoma challenged NEA to reveal their abortion support at different times during the six-day assembly.

An Ohio delegate questions NEA's definition of "reproductive freedom" in the Family Planning Resolution (I-13) at the Resolutions hearing, July 2. During debate on New Business Item A, Action Plan for Equity, at the general business session, July 4, the same Ohioan questioned at what point NEA withholds its support of a woman's decision to abort, commenting, "It is unreasonable for our teachers' union to stand for a practice that takes the lives of children, our clientele, before birth." The delegate received a "no limits" response to when the NEA stops its abortion support during the nine months of pregnancy.

A woman from Illinois spoke out against union support of abortion rights, saying the NEA should take no stand on abortion since it is a non-education issue. A New York delegate challenged NEA's support of a Planned Parenthood sex education video being distributed free of charge to teachers during the New Orleans NEA Representative Assembly, on the grounds that abortion was treated lightly in the video, as just another means of birth control; as an alternative more practical than adoption.

One delegate tried to ask if unanaesthesized second and third trimester salt poisoning and brain suction abortions were included in NEA's stand against mutilation and suffering in its Human Rights Resolution (I-10), but the delegate was not permitted to finish her question due to procedural problems on the floor with the call-in process. She was asked to come to the stage area to consult with the NEA Resolutions members privately. There she was told that the abortion issue has been brought up for twenty years at the NEA Representative Assembly.

The pro-abortion position of the NEA is an issue that pro-life educators say they won't let go until it's settled.
