Pro-Life Prayer & Picket Update

On Wednesday, July 2, 2008, Judy Bruns was one of several speakers at two different press conferences in Washington DC. These press conferences were held in conjunction with the pro-life prayer/demonstration during the NEA 2008 Representative Assembly. Mrs. Bruns has given permission for her speech to be shared on this website. PRESS STATEMENT


Hello, I‘m Judy Bruns, a board member of Teachers Saving Children® Inc. - National, a middle school teacher in Ohio, co-founder of Harbor House maternity home, and a 10-year delegate at these NEA Representative Assemblies.

“Semantic gymnastics”--That’s what we have fallen prey to in the NEA, with words like “right to choose,“ “pro-choice,“ and “reproductive freedom” becoming a part of our vernacular. Behind the smoke screen, in today’s world these phrases have taken on new meanings. Many unsuspecting teachers accept union leadership’s and delegates’ support of “reproductive freedom” in Resolution I-15 as neutral language, without questioning what the term stands for.

However, in 1998, at my first NEA Representative Assembly, I did question the term. I was told by the chair that through the words “reproductive freedom” in our Resolutions document, NEA supports, among other things, the “choice” to abort after the first trimester; after viability; up to and including delivery--that there are no limitations. This response underlies the “semantic gymnastics” of the term “reproductive freedom.“

Another recent example of “word games” occurred at my last state affiliate Representative Assembly in Ohio, where “reproductive freedom” was defined as including the decision to carry a pregnancy to term or to “abbreviate” the pregnancy. Now, in my language arts classes, my students “abbreviate” words. We don’t use the term to refer to stopping a baby’s heart from beating. . .Semantic gymnastics!

Our union leadership needs to stop the word games. . . Facts are now available through medical science, ultrasound technology, court testimonies and procedural descriptions from abortionists themselves; also, from women who have “been there.” Why aren’t we approaching this controversial term in our Resolutions document, “reproductive freedom,” with scientific minds rather than semantic gymnastics? (Consider that 3-D, 4-D ultrasounds show babies moving in utero when they’re 7 weeks old. Measurable brain waves start at the same age, and pain sensitivity begins in the second trimester.)

One of the goals of Teachers Saving Children® Inc. - National is to challenge NEA leadership to depart from the “word games,” the staff ties, and the financial ties to the abortion issue--and to simply stick to education.
