FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

First of all, I want to publicly accept the position of Executive Director for another year. I want to thank the Board of Trustees for their confidence in me in leading this organization. I am thankful to God for allowing me this opportunity to be involved in saving the lives of the unborn, His creation.

I want to thank each Board member for their support and wisdom as decisions are made throughout the year. I am also thankful that this organization has grown and for the support of each member. We are all very busy with our careers, families, and personal lives, but yet even the notes of encouragement and your prayers are much appreciated.

I am looking forward to the future months of TSC activities. Please join with us in this battle for life.

AFT ALSO HAS STRONG PRO-ABORTION STAND

Although most TSC members are affiliated with the NEA, there are some who are affiliated with AFT (American Federation of Teachers - AFL-CIO). Recently one of TSC's members contacted AFT to find out specifically their stand on abortion. The following is quoted from the response letter and their legislative and political activity resolution.

From the letter: "While on policy resolutions concerning abortion per se have been adopted, delegates to AFT's 1981 convention did approve the attached resolution, 'Women's Right to Choice' in response to the proposed Hyde Amendment in Congress."

Legislative and Political Activity Resolution:

72. WOMEN'S RIGHT TO CHOICE

"WHEREAS, women have the right to exercise control over their own bodies, and
WHEREAS, legislation has been proposed which would nullify this right;

RESOLVED, that the AFT strongly oppose any legislation or constitutional amendment which would abridge or deny women's right to choice in regard to reproductive freedom, and
RESOLVED, that the AFT ask the AFL-CIO to take similar action. (1981)"

Editor's Note: Both NEA and AFT have set a goal for a single national teacher's organization. However, current policy of both organizations prohibit the merger of these specific associations. NEA has recognized the need to work more closely with AFT and therefore has established a committee which is investigating the present NEA policies. This committee will report on their work at the May NEA Board meeting with possible recommendations regarding changes in NEA policy being forwarded to the Representative Assembly in July.

ATTENTION: NEA DELEGATES

Anyone attending the NEA Representative Assembly this summer in Washington DC needs to contact Educators for Life. This is a caucus working at the NEA Assembly whose purpose is to promote the civil rights of ALL human beings. Educators for Life promotes change within the NEA through members becoming involved as delegates and representatives on all levels. They are wanting to make contact with anyone who will be attending the NEA Assembly this summer so that everyone concerned about the abortion issue can work together as a team. Please contact Don Curry, PO Box 1673, Eagar, AZ 85925 (602-333-4248). It is suggested that you call so that you will be definitely aware of all the arrangements.

NEA PUBLICATIONS

There is a weekly publication for your local association leadership that often has information which all NEA members should read. It is called NEA NOW. Please check with one of your local officers or your building representative. Request that this publication be posted in your teacher's lounge. Take a few minutes to read this publication to find out more specifically what the NEA is doing with your dues money.

TSC PUBLIC RELATIONS

We are trying to get information about TSC out to as many people as possible. We need your help! One way that we are again hoping to do public relations is through the local Right to Life Chapters. We would like to be able to include our literature at Right to Life county fair booths again this summer. If you have contacts with local Right to Life Chapters and want to help out in this way, please contact the Executive Director for more details.

Also, if you have any other ideas as to how we can inform people about our organization, please let us know. TSC representatives are available for speaking engagements and workshops.
