The first weekend in May, as usual, found a small but determined group of devout, pro-life educators converging in Columbus, for the Ohio Education Association (OEA) Spring Representative Assembly. Knowing that God brings fruit, in time, the members of Life Issues Caucus have determined to be faithful, waiting in anticipation for the long-awaited success which only He can bring about, first by changing the hearts of men and women throughout the organization.
On the floor of the convention, and during the discussion of Resolutions, the members of Life Issues Caucus went to the microphones, requesting that Resolution I-3, Paragraph 2 be submitted to a task force. The hope was that such a group of members, from both sides of the abortion issue, could sit down and come up with wording that would be acceptable to all members of the OEA. This seemed like a reasonable request, since task forces have traditionally been used for a variety of issue-related items, when deemed necessary for the "good of the order." What we found, however, was that this was an issue that would not be addressed. The arguments against this motion were predictable, following the general pattern encountered on numerous occasions: the status quo is working quite nicely, thank you, so why change it? The arguments generally lacked substance, but this was nothing new; logic has habitually been ignored on occasions too numerous to count. One almost feels like a prophet, giving warning to a multitude which chooses to ignore the consequences of its own willful ways. Our prayer is that we will continue to speak the truth in love, that we will refuse to grow weary in doing good, and that we will entrust the outcome to God.
The exhibit table sponsored by members of Life Issues Caucus, was organized and overseen by Judy Bruns; it was well received by great numbers of teacher-delegates, and provided many opportunities to share the wonder of human life at all stages of development. Several educators--some retired and some just beginning their career--as well as others, helped serve at this exhibit, and were a wonderful testimony to the people at the convention.
The direction of Life Issues Caucus will not change; the means will evolve and change, as time goes on, the end will always be in sight.

OEA Regional Representative Assemblies are also held each fall and spring. It is very important for OEA delegates to attend their regional meetings, as well as the OEA RA.
Many local associations are not fully represented. Check with your local association president to make sure that your local association is being represented at these meetings. If there is not full representation, then find out the procedure for becoming a delegate. Please consider getting involved! Your voice needs to be heard!
