Since we are in the beginning stages of this organization, our activities at this time are minimal. However, as we grow and as we become more involved, our activities will increase. Currently, our activities include letter writing; the annual demonstration; encouraging OEA members to become active at the local, regional, state, and national levels; and supporting the Life Issues Caucus. We are also trying to let people know about the liberal agenda of the NEA, specifically their pro-abortion stand.
One may ask why join TSC if one is not a member of NEA. First of all, we are all in this battle together. The impact we will have is dependent upon the number of people we represent. Presently we have 68 paid members. Of the 68 members, 66% are either NEA full members or "Fair Share" members. The remaining 34% of our members include persons who teach in districts that are independent of national teacher associations, AFT members, retired teachers, teachers who are currently on leave, parents, college students, and other concerned individuals.
Secondly, we need all of you who agree with our purpose to join us TODAY and help us fight for the lives of the unborn. As we focus our thoughts on the miracle of Christmas, may we also remember the lives of the unborn children who may never live to celebrate life.
Local associations can send delegates to the NEA Representative Assembly. There can be 1 delegate per 150 members or major fraction thereof with expenses paid for by the local. Each year information is sent by NEA to the local presidents. Local delegates must be chosen and the name(s) reported to the OEA office by sometime in mid-April.
At-large delegates are chosen by the membership representing the various OEA units. At-large delegates receive partial funding from OEA. Candidacy forms are available from OEA. Filing deadline is January 30, 1992. Please consider becoming an at-large delegate to the NEA convention in Washington DC, July 3-8, 1992. If you cannot attend, please encourage other teachers who share our views to consider becoming a candidate.
Ballots plus biographical information of each candidate are usually sent to the locals some time in February or early March. Ballots are due back to the OEA office some time in mid-March. If you do not receive a biography of the candidates with your ballots, contact your local president.
The approximate dates given above for materials being sent and/or due are based on the dates that TSC had from last year. TSC will try to have exact dates for the next newsletter. If you have further questions or need additional information regarding the choosing of delegates for the NEA Representative Assembly, contact Jackie Hawley at the OEA office (1-800-282-1500).
Get involved either as a candidate and/or educate yourself about the candidates and vote!
We are also encouraging you as pro-life teachers to write the OEA and express your thoughts regarding OEA's stand on abortion. Letters to the editor must include the name and school district of the writer, must be no more than 150 words, and can be addressed to: LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, Ohio Schools magazine, Ohio Education Association, 225 E Broad ST, Box 2550, Columbus, OH 43216.
As chairman of our new Life Issues Caucus, and on behalf of its other two founding members, Ken Mazer and Dan Coletta, I am pleased to announce that a move is now under way to direct the Ohio Education Association into a role where it can truly have a positive effect on education in Ohio.
As strange as it may sound, we presently seem to have a situation where we flounder between two identities-are we a professional organization or are we a labor union? The mission of Life Issues Caucus is to help channel resources into those avenues dealing with education and its improvement. This means eliminating issues such as international politics (sanctions on South Africa, bilateral nuclear freeze, etc.) and controversial moral and ethical positions (abortion, storing of hazardous wastes, etc.) from our point of concentration. Initially, we have chosen to focus on the issue of abortion, seeking to rid official OEA documents of all position statements on it, whether direct or implied.
This year's Fall OEA Representative Assembly, held on Saturday, December 7, found us passing out fliers inviting delegates to our first meeting of the Life Issues Caucus. We met for a short time during the lunch break, at a convenient location, and found that our numbers had grown sevenfold; we anticipate growing even more as we prepare for our work at the Spring Representative Assembly. Our exact strategy is yet to be fully developed, but we are looking forward to seeing great things happen.
Editor's Note: Although this caucus will be dealing with more issues than just abortion, TSC will continue to cooperate with this caucus and keep our members posted on the workings of this caucus since their initial focus is in line with our purpose.
"Its approach is 'feelings explorative'. It fails to stress absolute values of abstinence before marriage and the grave consequences of STDs including HIV/AIDS. This brochure is designed for middle school children. It uses that dangerous decision making process, discredited in effective education courses, as exposed by Dr. William Coulson. The brochure suggests parents as a 'good place to START', and then adds 'others'. 'Others' use tax dollars, so MUST include the contraceptive option. We need to fight for abstinence only education. Simple? Yes, but it does not give children a confusing message."
College students are given the opportunity to join TSC at a reduced rate. If you are presently enrolled in a college or university undergraduate degree program, you may join TSC for only $10.00.
Memberships will be good until August 31, 1992. Contributions and membership are NOT tax deductible. For more TSC membership information contact the Coordinator at PO Box 125, Damascus OH 44619.
The national organization of TSC is sponsoring a special event at the NEA's national headquarters in Washington DC on this date. Pro-life teachers, parents, and students are invited to peacefully pray and picket for one hour from 4:00 - 5:00 PM in front of the NEA building located at 1201 16th St NW at the intersection of M Street. This additional event will follow the regular March for Life events. This is an ideal opportunity to generate media exposure of the NEA leadership's pro-abortion stand and activism. If you ARE going to Washington DC, please contact national TSC (609-298-4843) prior to January 15th for more information.
For those pro-life teachers and school employees who can't go to Washington DC, it is suggested that you attend the pro-life marches or rallies being held in you local areas. Let's stand together for life on this most important anniversary date.
