FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

As you will know from reading this newsletter, there are a lot of exciting things happening with TSC. I am really excited about the way things are moving, and the increase in the number of members and activities.

TSC has received a $75.00 contribution to help our organization pay the initial bulk mailing fee. We are very close to qualifying for a bulk mailing permit, but the initial fee is $150.00 which was not budgeted this fiscal year. Anyone wishing to make a one time donation towards the remaining cost of this fee can contact the Executive Director.

Financially at this time, we are able to cover the expenses of the organization, except for the postage line item. Even with cutting back on the number of newsletters that are being sent out, postage is a very expensive item. If you would desire to help financially, your one time contribution would help us continue to lay the firm foundation upon which we can build a solid organization. All contributions are NOT tax deductible.

Please consider the information presented in this newsletter. Let's continue to join together in the battle for life.

DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW that the Ohio General Assembly is currently considering House Bill 408 - Professional Standards Board? This bill already passed the House on January 7, 1992 by a vote of 71-26. The bill as of February 11th was in the Senate Education, Retirement and Aging Committee, chaired by Senator Cooper Snyder. PLEASE NOTE that this bill will change the way the professional standards of teachers are currently determined. This bill would establish a professional standards board of 22 who will be appointed by the Governor. Of the 22 members of this board, 19 will be persons from the teaching establishment, 1 will be from the State Department of Education, and 2 will be from the general public. This bill would allow the establishing of standards for teachers by teachers. The bill does NOT identify or define the standards, but only identifies the members of the board. There is not much time, so call now for a coy of the bill and the analysis (1-800-282-0253 from 9 AM - 4 PM), then call and/or write members of the Education Committee and your Ohio senator and express your concerns about this bill. We cannot allow "the fox to be in charge of the hen house."

DID YOU KNOW that the delegates at the OEA Representative Assembly in December called for the establishment of an OEA system of monitoring and reporting right-wing activities to local association presidents? Refer to the January, 1992 issue of Ohio School for a summary of other OEA legislative priorities.

DID YOU KNOW that the NEA has already done a survey of the 1992 Presidential Candidates and their stand on education? Refer to the February, 1992 issue of NEA TODAY, page 19. Please note the NEA goals that are listed, especially number 24.

NEA DELEGATE PROCEDURE

All policies of the NEA are adopted by the delegates to the annual Representative Assembly. These delegates are selected by their colleagues in the local and state affiliates to represent their views in the deliberation of the assembly. However, the policies adopted do not represent the majority of the teaching profession. We all can get involved by becoming delegates to the NEA Representative Assembly or by voting for those who do represent our philosophy.

Local associations can send delegates to the NEA Representative Assembly either themselves or by being a part of a cluster group. For those locals with 76 or more members, there can be 1 delegate per 150 members or major fraction thereof with expenses paid for by the local. For those locals with fewer than 76 members, they can become a part of a cluster group. Information was sent by NEA to local presidents in early February. Local delegates must be chosen and the name(s) reported to the OEA office by April 10th.

At-large delegates are chosen by the membership representing the various OEA units. At-large delegates receive partial funding from OEA. The candidacy deadline is past. Ballots plus biographical information of each candidate have already been sent to the locals. Ballots are to be returned to the OEA office by March 16th. If you do not receive a biography of the candidates with your ballots, contact your local president.

If you have further questions regarding the choosing of delegates for the NEA Representative Assembly, contact Jackie Hawley or Becky LeMaster at the OEA office (1-800-282-1500).

EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT THE CANDIDATES AND VOTE!

LIFE ISSUES CAUCUS

Life Issues Caucus is now organized and is preparing to present an item to the OEA Representative Assembly in May. Initially, they have chosen to focus on the issue of abortion, seeking to rid official OEA documents of all position statements on it, whether direct or implied.

Anyone - delegate, alternate, or visitor - attending the OEA Representative Assembly in Columbus this coming May can join this caucus. A person does NOT have to be a member of TSC to join. If you wish to be a part of this caucus, PLEASE contact Gary Winney, chairman (216-944-4409), as soon as possible.

TSC PUBLIC RELATIONS

We are trying to get information about TSC out to as many people as possible. We need your help. One way that we are again hoping to do public relations is through the local Right to Life Chapters. We would like to be able to include our literature at Right to Life county fair booths again this summer. If you have contacts with local Right to Life Chapters and want to help out in this way, please contact me for more details. Also, if you have any other ideas as to how we can inform people about our organization, please let us know.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The TSC Constitution and Bylaws were ratified on January 20, 1992. The governing body of TSC is now a Board of Trustees. According to the Bylaws the new Board of Trustees will initially consist of the seven member Ad Hoc committee, serving at the time of the ratification of the Bylaws. Please feel free to contact any member of the Board with suggestions or questions.
