FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

As a pro-life teacher I am extremely offended that an organization that is supposedly dedicated to the welfare and education of children would willingly and knowingly participate in the slaughter of the innocent. Please make plans now to attend our annual demonstration and/or our general membership meeting on June 30th. Let's join together in this "battle for life".

OEA CENSORS DELEGATES DISCUSSION OF ABORTION

The OEA Spring Representative Assembly was held May 1-2 in Columbus, OH. Attending were some 1,4000 delegates from all over the State, and the purpose, as usual, was to conduct such business as electing officers, updating position statements on various issues, both social and political, and such housekeeping activities as reviewing the annual budget.

On Friday delegates affirmed support of abortion rights while discussing, for approximately 35 minutes, Resolution I-3:

OEA Resolution I-3 (second paragraph only):
The Association supports the United States Supreme Court decisions that guarantee reproductive freedom to all women. The association urges all branches of Federal, state, and local governments to give high priority to complying with these Supreme Court Decisions and to making available all methods of family planning to women and men unable to take advantage of private facilities. Where needed and accepted by the local community, the Association urges the implementation of community-operated, school-based family planning clinics that will provide students with intensive counseling by trained personnel.

However, on Saturday, several pro-life delegates, who were working together through Life Issues Caucus, expressed disappointment that the assembly "objected to consideration" two New Business Items concerning OEA's position supporting abortion rights. The following two New Business Items were on the docket to be presented and both were "objected to consideration" because of the issue to be discussed.

NB-9: NEUTRALITY OF ABORTION RIGHTS
OEA shall be neutral on the issue of abortion.

NB-16: ASK THE MEMBERS
The OEA will develop and implement an official ballot to be sent to each member through the Ohio Schools magazine.

Through unbiased questioning, the ballot should attempt to ascertain member opinion on the issue of neutrality of the organization regarding abortion.

Objection to these New Business Items further confirms that the OEA has a pro-abortion stand. However, support for neutrality was noted, and Life Issues Caucus intends to continue to work in the fight for neutrality on this social issue.

ANNUAL DEMONSTRATION INFORMATION

DATE:    Tuesday, June 20, 1992

TIME:    11:30 AM to 1:30 PM

PLACE:    OEA Headquarters, 225 E Broad St, Columbus OH

Your help is needed to stage our annual pro-life demonstration against NEA's pro-abortion stand. We are hoping for a minimum of 25-30 people. Maps and ideas for signs are included in this newsletter. Come and join us in front of the OEA Building.

As a reminder, NEA is one of the primary advocates of Planned Parenthood and their attack on the children of this nation. Please see item in this newsletter as to the events that occurred at the recent OEA Spring Representative Assembly.

We will in no way be attacking the NEA union at large or the membership. Our target is the leadership and the policies of the union. We need to continue to make our feelings known to the leadership of the NEA. The general public also needs to be made aware of the two-faced nature of the NEA.

Please share this information with pro-life teachers and those whom you think would like to attend, but do not publicly advertise it in anyway. TSC will be notifying the media of the event. The TSC Board of Trustees will serve as the spokesmen to the media.
