FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

I am very excited about what is happening within the Ohio Chapter of TSC. Our battle within OEA is continuing and interest in TSC is growing.

The need for an organization such as Teachers Saving Children® is vital in today's society. It is important for the people at the grassroots level to get involved. Thus, we need all of you who agree with our purpose to join us TODAY and help us fight for the lives of the unborn. I hope that you too can get excited and involved in rescuing our professional educators' organizations. The impact we have will be dependent upon the number of people we represent.

Remember, we can make a difference! Get involved by helping us spread the news about TSC so that unborn lives can be saved!

OEA REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY REPORT

On Friday and Saturday, April 30 - May 1, 1993, approximately 1200 delegates met at the Veterans Memorial in Columbus for their spring business session. The main business was the discussion of the OEA Resolutions, the 1993-94 Budget, Educational Reform, and 12 new business items. Elections for several positions were also held.

During the discussion of resolutions, members of Life Issues Caucus were able to hold Resolution I-3 which allowed for further discussion on the item. Resolution I-3 paragraph 2 states:

"The Association supports the United States Supreme Court decisions that guarantee reproductive freedom. The Association urges all branches of Federal, State, and local governments to give high priority to complying with these Supreme Court decisions..."

When the Resolutions Committee members were questioned as to the definition of "reproductive freedom", it was confirmed that the definition does include abortion. In further questioning, it was stated that OEA would lobby against any legislation that would infringe on the right to reproductive freedom. OEA lobbyists serve as "watchdogs" on legislative issues and are paid through OEA membership dues.

Delegates were open to debating both sides of the issue. Several delegates expressed concern regarding the divisiveness of the issue within the OEA. The motion failed on a voice vote to delete paragraph 2 of Resolution I-3. When compared to previous RA's, there was increased vocal support to eliminate this divisive issue from the OEA Resolution document.

Life Issues Caucus is already working on strategies for future OEA RA's regarding the abortion issue.

1993 DEMONSTRATION INFORMATION

After much discussion, the TSC Board of Trustees has decided to consider some different options regarding our annual demonstration. There needs to be a specific purpose for the demonstration and it needs to be held at a time when an impact on the OEA leadership can be made. Therefore, we will NOT be having a demonstration this summer. The Board will be discussing possible options at its fall Board meeting.

NEA CONVENTION 1993

The 1993 NEA Convention will be held in San Francisco June 30 - July 5. It is vital that you contact your delegates to the convention, letting them know your philosophy on various issues.

If you have a delegate(s) from your local attending the NEA convention, contact should be very easy. However, many locals do not or can not send delegates to the NEA. Therefore, state at-large delegates need to be contacted. All local association presidents were notified of the at-large NEA delegate election results in early April. These results were to be posted in each building of the local. If these were not posted, then contact your local president and find out who your delegates are.

Get involved by contacting your NEA delegates! They are your representatives!

OHIO'S EDUCATIONAL REFORM UPDATE

The Ohio Senate voted on Substitute HB 152 in late May. The bill included several changes from the House version. The bill is now in a joint conference committee which will work out the differences between the House and Senate versions. The revised bill will return to the House and Senate for final approval. This bill must be passed and sent to the governor for his signature before June 30, 1993.

There are also two other bills of significance which are related to educational reform. HB 224 would eliminate the EMIS database and would transfer funds budgeted and not encumbered to the budget stabilization fund.

SB 127 would create an appointed Professional Standards Board. This item was deleted from HB 152. SB 127 would create an appointed rather than an elected Standards Board and would also set up licensure for educators with NO grandfather provision.

Keep in contact with your local state representatives and senators. Time is of the essence as the cost of educational reform to Ohio families and their children will be ad infinitum.

For the most current information on Educational Reform in Ohio please contact either Roundtable Freedom Forum at 1-800-522-VOTE or Melanie Elsey of Eagle Form of Ohio at 216-896-2971.

RIGHT TO LIFE

In these troubled times when all our
Morals and values are under attack
There is one struggle we all must share
For those who cannot fight back

I speak of the unborn child -
No more oppressed minority can there be.
Why is he denied his one basic right
In America, "the land of the free"?

Some say it's a matter of free will
Others say it's an individual's choice
I say that all who care must speak out
For those who have no voice

The taking of a human life
Brings shame upon us all
The murder of our children
Is a crime we must outlaw

So if we raise our voices
For the cause in which we strive
We can prevent this slaughter
And protect our right to life.

-Anonymous

"I have set before you life and
death, blessings and curses;
Now choose life, so that you and
your children may live."

-Deuteronomy 30:19 (NIV)
