FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Connie Bancroft

I am very excited about what is happening within the Ohio Chapter of TSC. There are reasons for encouragement as we reminisce over the past year.

We have seen healthy growth and interest in TSC. This year we had 125 members. Many others have written and expressed an interest in TSC. Our presence and visibility throughout the state of Ohio and even across the nation are increasing. There is also increased involvement of pro-life educators within the ranks of the OEA as well as local and district affiliates.

The need for an organization such as Teachers Saving Children® is vital in today's society. It is even more important today for the people at the grassroots level to get involved. Thus, we need all of you who agree with our purpose to join in helping us spread the word about TSC and to encourage others to join with us in fighting for the lives of the unborn.

Remember, we can and we are making a difference! Carefully consider the information presented in this newsletter and find out how you can become a part of those making a difference.

Have a great summer and let's continue to work together in the battle for life.

OEA REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY REPORT

On Friday and Saturday, May 6-7, 1994, approximately 1400 delegates met at the Veterans Memorial in Columbus for their spring business session. The main business was the discussion of several Constitution & Bylaws changes, the OEA Resolutions, and the 1994-95 Budget. Elections for several positions were also held.

During the discussion of Resolutions, members of Life Issues Caucus were able to hold Resolution I-3 which allowed for further discussion on the item. Resolution I-3 paragraph 2 states:

"The Association supports family planning including the right to reproductive freedom. The Association urges all branches of Federal, state, and local governments to give high priority to making available all methods of family planning to women and men unable to take advantage of private facilities. Where needed and accepted by the local community, the Association urges the implementation of community-operated, school-based family planning clinics that will provide students with intensive counseling by trained personnel."

The Resolutions Commission did make some changes in language, but the intent is the same. The language changes allowed the OEA Resolution to be stated more closely with the NEA Resolution I-13.

Members of Life Issues Caucus tried to amend Resolution I-3 by the deletion of paragraph 2. Delegates on both sides of the issue expressed their opinions. The motion failed on a standing vote to delete paragraph 2 of Resolution I-3. When compared to previous RA's, there was increased support to eliminate this divisive issue from the OEA Resolution document.

Life Issues Caucus is already working on strategies for future OEA RA's regarding the abortion issue.

OEA LOCAL ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP SURVEY RESULTS

In the April TSC Newsletter, we requested your help in conducting a survey. As of June 10, 1994, results have been received from eleven (11) local associations. The results are as follows:

# of Surveys Distributed: 1841
# of Respondents: 1027

Position #1: OEA should take a position in favor of legalized abortion. 96 (10%)
Position #2: OEA should take a position against legalized abortion. 164.5 (16%)
Position #3: OEA should take NO position concerning abortion. 763.5 (74%)

These results were shared at the recent OEA RA in early May. These results along with comments received were also given in written form to OEA leadership.

We still need results from anyone who has not yet sent them in. We will continue to update the survey results as results are received. Thank you for your help in this important matter.

ATTENTION: NEA DELEGATES

Anyone attending the NEA Representative Assembly this summer in New Orleans needs to contact Educators for Life. This is a caucus working at the NEA Assembly whose purpose is to promote the civil rights of ALL human beings. Educators for Life promotes change within the NEA through members becoming involved as delegates and representatives on all levels. They are wanting to make contact with anyone who will be attending the NEA Assembly this summer so that everyone concerned about the abortion issue can work together as a team. Please contact Don Curry at 602-726-1289 so that you will definitely be aware of all the arrangements.

REMINDER: CONTACT YOUR DELEGATES

The 1994 NEA Convention will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, July 1 through July 6. It is vital that you contact your delegates to the convention, letting them know your philosophy on various issues. If you have a delegate(s) from your local attending the NEA convention, contact should be easy. However, many locals do not or can not send delegates to the NEA. Therefore, state at-large delegates need to be contacted. If you need the name(s) and address(es) of your delegate(s), please contact your local president or Becky LeMasters at the OEA Office (1-800-282-1500).

Get involved by contacting your NEA delegates! They are your representatives!

TSC PUBLIC RELATIONS

We continually need your help in getting information about TSC out to as many people as possible. We continue to work with other pro-life organizations in a variety of ways. We would like to be able to include our literature at Right to Life county fair booths again this summer. If you have contact with local Right to Life Chapters or other pro-life organizations and want to help out in this way, please contact TSC for more detail. Our revised brochure will be available shortly. Our 1994-95 membership is currently underway. Please help us in whatever way possible to promote this vital organization.
