ELECTION DAY - NOVEMBER 3, 1992

As we all probably know, this year's election is vital to both our state and nation. It is important for all registered voters to go to the polls this year and express their freedom of choice through voting. The biggest reason people give for not voting is that they do not know enough about the candidates and the issues. Included with this newsletter are two pieces of information to help you become more informed. First is a copy of "Where Do The Candidates Stand on Abortion?" from National Right to Life. The second is a list of the Ohio Right to Life PAC endorsements. Please pass this information along to other pro-life citizens. If you need more information about a particular candidate, please contact Ohio Right to Life at 614-445-8369.

Another organization that can help you with information is Northeast Ohio Roundtable. They have published a non-partisan Voters Guide that provides in-depth interviews, biographies, and survey responses covering statewide candidates and issues. To receive this Voters Guide or more information on specific candidates contact Northeast Ohio Roundtable at 216-349-3393 (or 1-800-522-VOTE).

REMEMBER - Responsible citizenship is no accident! Get informed and vote on November 3rd!

TSC INITIATES LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN

Whether or not you are a member of the NEA, it is important that TSC members communicate their concern of the NEA's abortion position annually to both the OEA president and the local association president. Please also encourage other pro-life teachers to make their opinion heard each year at membership renewal time (October). To effect change at the State and National levels our message which is rational and sensible must be heard. TSC is asking all pro-life teachers and concerned citizens (Yes, concerned parents and citizens can express their concerns as well) to take five minute and write OEA, sending your letters by November 3rd. Although it is recommended that you personalize your own letter, the following is a sample that you can use as a guide. (NOTE: Please send TSC a copy of any response you receive.)

Marilyn Cross, President
Ohio Education Association
225 East Broad Street
PO Box 2550
Columbus OH 43216

Dear President Cross,

I strongly believe that the NEA/OEA should not involve itself in the issue of abortion and therefore should take no position on this issue. I object to the NEA/OEA using my dues money for this political cause. Teachers pay Association dues to be represented in collective bargaining, not to be misrepresented on social and moral issues.

Abortion has no bearing on the working conditions of teachers and is extremely divisive to the union objectives and membership. Regardless of an Educator's position on abortion, we can agree that there are many more important issues threatening our working conditions and the educational process.

NEA/OEA must cease taking controversial political stands without a clear mandate from its members! Educators view abortion in various ways. No single NEA/OEA position can capture teachers' diverse individual moral and ethical positions. I believe that the NEA/OEA does all members a disservice enforcing their positions on individuals who can consider and decide these things for themselves.

Signed

The phone numbers given are those listed in Ohio Schools for the office or home phone of the administrative staff person. You can call for exact times and location of these meetings.

The OEA Representative Assembly will be December 5th at Veterans Memorial in Columbus.

Life Issues Caucus is interested in receiving the names of pro-life delegates who will be attending any of the regional and/or OEA Representative Assemblies. These persons do not need to be members of TSC. Please contact Gary Winney at 216-944-4409 as soon as possible.
