May 1991, Columbus, Ohio. About 1200 delegates to the Ohio Education Association's Spring Representative Assembly met in Columbus May 3-4, 1991. Their purpose was to conduct such business as electing officers, updating position statements on various issues, both social and political, and such housekeeping activities as reviewing the annual budget.
At this assembly the delegates were presented with a New Business Item asking for neutrality in the abortion issue. (NB-10: Unity of Purpose - "Since abortion is a divisive issue among the OEA membership, all reference to abortion, direct or implied, shall be deleted from OEA official documents.") However, no consideration was given to the New Business Item because objection to the item was received from the floor and carried by majority voice vote.
It is the height of foolishness for the OEA to condone or support a practice (abortion) which eliminates the very people, the very client . . . that our profession is suppose to serve. Pro-life teachers of Ohio are only asking that the union refrain from any sort of activism regarding abortion and remain clearly neutral on the issue. We are also asking that we are allowed the future opportunity to express our concern on this issue in hopes of saving the lives of future students. We are not without support on this issue and will continue to seek a resolution.
