May 10, 1994, Columbus, Ohio. More OEA delegates than ever before, from both sides of the abortion issue, debated the Ohio Education Association's (OEA) strong pro-abortion position.
"All we are asking is for the OEA to stay out of the abortion issue," said Connie Bancroft, Executive Director of Teachers Saving Children®. "They have no business imposing their pro-abortion beliefs on us and students and teachers of the future."
"If the OEA was completely successful with its pro-abortion agenda, there would be very few students left to teacher," said Dave Kaiser, a delegate from Mercer County. "They should allow individuals to pursue their personal convictions regarding abortion by adopting the one position which will truly be neutral, a position of silence."
"There definitely was increased support this year to eliminate this divisive issue from the OEA Resolution document," said Ken Mazer, a delegate from Wickliffe. "Because of the mounting support, the OEA was no longer able to side step the issue with a quick voice vote." Delegates attending OEA's Representative Assembly in Columbus on May 6-7, again voted to retain the abortion language of Resolution I-3 but by a narrower margin than at previous assembly meetings.
A survey recently conducted by teachers in nine school districts across the state indicated that 73% of teachers responding agreed that the OEA should not take a position concerning abortion. The message from three out of four teachers was, "Stick to education; Stay out of abortion".
Teachers Saving Children® is an Ohio organization of pro-life teachers and other concerned citizens committed to establishing among professional educators' organizations a respect for all human life from conception to natural death.
