TEACHERS REQUEST NO POSITION
ON ABORTION ISSUE BY OEA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 3, 1996, Columbus, Ohio.  Several delegates to the Ohio Education Association (OEA) Representative Assembly (RA) held in Columbus on May 3-4 expressed disappointment concerning OEA's position on abortion. At the Friday Representative Assembly, delegates voted to retain the abortion language of Resolution I-3 paragraph 2 which states:

"The Association supports family planning including the right to reproductive freedom. The Association urges all branches of Federal, state, and local governments to give high priority to making available all methods of family planning to women and men unable to Take advantage of private facilities...."

In February a survey was conducted by a group of concerned Ohio educators. Dave Kaiser, a delegate from Fort Recovery, stated "despite the fact that the OEA president wants to maintain the current OEA position and has discouraged teachers from responding, hundreds of teachers responded to our survey and an overwhelming 82% want the OEA out of the abortion business."

According to Connie Bancroft who is from Damascus, Ohio and the Executive Director of Teachers Saving Children® "many teachers and school employees across the state are very concerned about the pro-abortion position of the OEA. Teachers resent their dues being spent on non-educational issues, especially ones that will eliminate future students. Many teachers also feel that delegates attending the OEA RA do not represent their views on this issue. Several of those surveyed commented that they appreciated being asked their opinion on this issue. Not only does the OEA refuse to survey their membership, they actively discouraged members from responding to this most recent survey. What are they trying to hide?"

Mike Connaughton stated "in two years of surveys every local which has responded has demonstrated they do not support OEA Resolution I-3. If there is a majority who support I-3, as OEA claims, then why has there never been a survey of a local association showing support for this Resolution."

Of the twenty-four locals that did respond this year, sixteen completed the survey with only 10% of the respondents requesting that Professional Education Associations (PEA) take a position on "reproductive freedom"; 8% requesting that PEA's take a position against "reproductive freedom"' 82% requesting that PEA's take NO position on "reproductive freedom". The number of respondents was about 1% of the total OEA membership. The OEA RA delegation reflects about 1% of the total membership.
