September 18, 1992, Akron, Ohio. Teachers Saving Children® (TSC) will be doing one of the workshops at the 1992 Pro-Life Convention in Akron, Ohio on Saturday, September 22nd from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM. A panel of educators and members of TSC will discuss four main topics: The NEA Agenda; The OEA Agenda; Fair Share and Legal Recourse; and TSC's Purpose & Activities. The panel includes Connie Bancroft, the Executive Director of TSC & a public school teacher; Gary Winney, a public school teacher; Ken Mazer, a public school teacher; and Doug Shamp, a private school administrator.
Pro-life educators of Ohio hope that the NEA will realize how abortion on demand has become a divisive and disastrous issue for their profession. NEA/OEA's abortion endorsement mocks our heritage of dedicated teachers who care for children. It is the height of foolishness to condone or support a practice (abortion) which eliminates the very people, the very client . . . that our profession is suppose to serve. If any group would defend the unborn, it should be teachers!
NEA uses Resolution I-13, formally Resolution I-21, (1985, 1986) and New Business Item 65 (1990) to endorse and promote abortion. Two 1992 New Business Items, 22 & 29, further affirm the strong pro-abortion stand that the NEA has. Additionally NEA supported the pro-abortion rally in Washington DC both in November 1989 and in April 1992.
NEA/OEA must cease taking controversial political stands without a clear mandate from its members - which it refuses to do! The NEA must get back to educational issues and out of the social issues agenda. Pro-life teachers of Ohio are only asking that the NEA/OEA refrain from any sort of activism regarding abortion, remain clearly neutral on the issue, and thus become more representative of its membership. TSC is not without support and will continue to seek neutrality in the NEA/OEA on the abortion issue.
Teachers Saving Children® Inc. of Ohio is an organization of pro-life teachers of Ohio and other concerned citizens committed to establishing among professional educators' organizations a respect for all human life from conception to natural death. The Ohio Chapter was formed in the spring of 1991 and is affiliated with the national organization. Currently there are about 90 members statewide and about 600 nationally.
