January 22, 2005 marked the 32nd anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision. By now, over 45 million children have been sacrificed on the altar of egocentric convenience. We have now lost the equivalent population of PA, MD, VA, WV, CT, RI, OH, NH, and DC combined!
Praise God, there has been some positive progress with the passage of the late-term abortion ban in 2003 and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act in 2004. However, a major setback was California's recent passing of Proposition 71 which directs $3 billion to do "clone and destroy" research on human embryos to obtain embryonic stem cells. Not only will this be a tragic loss of more human life, but there is no evidence that the use of stem cells produces the miracle healing and restoration which is claimed by advocates. Interestingly, little has been reported about the successes being experienced with the use of readily available adult stem cells, or the potential for using stem cells extracted from the umbilical blood of newborn infants.
Laura Bush has said that embryonic stem cell research gives false hope to many who are suffering with terrible diseases. In contrast, stem cells can be safely harvested from adult bone marrow and adult fat cells as well as from placental tissue and umbilical cord blood of newborn infants. Research has confirmed that these stem cells produce human fat, bone, cartilage, and muscle tissue, and can help certain diseases such as diabetes.
President George Bush has said, "We believe in the promise of modern medicine, but we also believe in the principles of ethical medicine." Yet our own PA Senator Arlen Specter supports "therapeutic cloning."
Teachers Saving Children® National Executive Director, Connie Bancroft, states in our brochure that "support for the intentional abuse or destruction of children at any stage of development contradicts the high ideal of our profession." One might add that to deliberately create life by cloning and then destroy that life is a flawed and immoral concept. The Bible warns, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil." (Isaiah 5:20). Will you continue to speak out against these evils in our society and protect our children, both born and unborn?
The National Education Association (NEA) has long claimed to maintain a position of neutrality on the abortion issue. Will the NEA give equal support to both sides of the abortion issue when given the chance?
In 2004, the NEA headquarters in Washington, D.C., seved as a hospitality center for teachers participating in the spring "March for Women's Lives" pro-abortion march. Some teachers in attendance wore T-shirts in support of the pro-choice march, with the NEA logo on the back of the shirt. In addition, the New Jersey Education Association sponsored buses for state members to attend the event.
Seeking equality, some courageous NEA members from Ohio and Pennsylvania requested that the NEA reciprocate and provide the same sevice for the January "March for Life" in Washington, D.C.
The Ohio Delegation voted down the proposal, but it was appealed on the grounds of fairness. In Pennsylvania the item was referred to the NEA Executive Committee. As this article was submitted for publication, the NEA had not yet made a decision, contributing to the body of evidence that the NEA holds a pro-abortion position. (Note: This article will be updated in the next newsletter.)
The PA Pro-Life Federation has set a goal "to attract a million supporters, and to develop chapters in all 67 counties." Should we set any lesser goal??
Well, realistically, not a million...but we would like to enroll at least hundreds of members and to have local chapters in the future. We would be delighted to have regional chapters working and meeting together to promote pro-life issues. Please encourage your friends and co-workers to join our Pennsylvania Chapter. Remember, memebership is open to everyone, not only to educators. Call or e-mail Robin Ross for brochures or extra newsletters. Please also consider becoming involved, perhaps as a board member or helping to organize regional or local chapters.
Did you know that the United States approves RU-486, but China does not? China, with a strong one-child family policy and its many thousands of abortions annually, considers RU-486 to be too dangerous to use. Incredible!
There will be a "City on the Hill" Youth Conference at Lebanon Valley College on July 18-23, 2005. It is open to high school students, ages 15-18, and will focus on leadership training and learning the governmental process. Information is available at either www.pafamily.org or 1-800-FAMILY-1.
The U.S. House of Representatives has voted "No" to abortion on military bases, refusing to adopt an amendment that would have authorized abortion on demand at U.S. military medical facilities overseas. Current law prohibits abortions from being performed in these facilities (even if the client pays the direct costs), except to save the life of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest. During consideration of the Fiscal Year 2005 Defense Authorization Bill (H.R. 4200), Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA) offered an amendment to repeal this ban for overseas facilities. The amendment failed, 221-202 (Roll Call Number 197). Thus, the pro-life law was preserved. To see the voting records of all members of Congress on this and/or other pro-life issues during the current or previous sessions of Congress, visit the Legislative Action Center at the National Right to Life Committee website at www.nrlc.org. (National Right to LIfe News, Vol. 31, No. 6, 2004).
While over one out of every three pregnancies ends in abortion in our country, recent years have shown a slow but continual decline in the rate of women choosing abortion. In addition, with the passing of the late-term abortion ban in 2003 and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act in 2004 (which recognizes unborn children as legal victims of federal crimes), as well as the introduction of a new bill for the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act and a ban on the patenting of human embryos, it shows us that God is working through persistent and prayerful people who faithfully strive to provide alternatives to abortion, to reach out to women in need, and to raise awareness and promote a culture that values life. (Pennsylvania Citizen, Vol. 17, No. 1, 2005)
Executive Director, Robin Ross, and her husband will be making their third missions trip to the Ukraine in May. They will be located in the Odessa region, and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they travel and serve there.
What if....God could not take the time to bless us today
What if....we never saw another flower bloom
What if....God didn't walk with us today
What if....God stopped loving and caring for us
What if....God would not hear us today
What if....God answered our prayers
because we did not follow Him today?
because we could not take the time to thank Him yesterday?
because we grumbled when God sent the rain?
because we failed to recognize our need to walk with Him?
because we failed to love and care for others?
because we would not listen to Him?
the way we answer His call to service?
